(AmericanProsperity.com) – Throughout history, a free press and its journalists have been a cornerstone to keeping governments accountable for their deeds. Mexico lost two more reporters after crime in the country soared this summer, making it one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work. This, in turn, has had many people worrying about the state of the nation.
On Monday, July 20, gunmen killed journalist Abraham Mendoza as he was driving along a main street in Morelia, Michoacan. Authorities were able to locate the three suspects immediately after the shooting. Mendoza was known in the area for his hard-hitting radio broadcasts, which were often critical of the nation’s government.
Soon after, another group of gunmen killed the owner of InfoGuayma, a Mexico news outlet. The owner, Ricardo Dominguez Lopez, received death threats previously and was killed on his birthday.
Understandably, many organizations are speaking out against these crimes, including Reporters Without Borders, who shared the news on Twitter:

So far this year, five journalists have been killed in Mexico. This is on top of the nine journalists that were killed in the nation last year, meaning Mexico has the largest number of reporter deaths of any nation not at war. Clearly, murder in the country, especially against the press, needs to be investigated and punished.
