On March 9, the suspects appeared in court facing murder charges. Three of them were already serving time in a federal prison on unrelated charges when Puerto Rican authorities had them extradited from Florida as part of what they called “Operation Knockout.” Another suspect was already in a Puerto Rican prison for an unrelated case, where they remain. The fifth suspect emerged with just a towel wrapped around his waist after police surrounded his home with long rifles and knocked on a window.
Authorities mentioned two other suspects in the case but detailed they were killed in unrelated events taking place in 2013 and 2015. The boxer was in a Ford Mustang with his friend when he was shot in the face; his friend was also shot one time. Camacho remained in the hospital for several days while medically brain dead as his family debated what to do. A close friend of the Puerto Rican boxer noted the charges against the suspects were important to him as he continues to mourn his friend who, he said, didn’t seek conflict with anyone and was a great guy.
Three of the suspects, William Rodriguez, Joshua Romero and Luis Garcia, are being held on $800,000 bonds. Jesus Adorno’s bond is $300,000, and the fifth suspect, Juan Rivera, is being held on a $1 million bond.
Camacho’s mother stormed into Puerto Rico’s Department of Justice, raising her right hand and proclaiming that justice had been served. The elderly woman added that she could now finally eat and have some coffee in the morning.
