5 Women Sue Texas Over Abortion Ban

(AmericanProsperity.com) – The Center for Reproductive Rights announced on Tuesday morning it filed a lawsuit on behalf of two obstetrician-gynecologists and five women, challenging the state of Texas’ abortion ban after the women were allegedly denied this medical procedure despite risks to their lives due to nonviable pregnancies. This is the first time that pregnant women have taken legal action against abortion bans in the United States after the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade.

According to the lawsuit, the five pregnant women were denied the medical procedure because health experts feared potential penalties against them. It also pointed out that the plaintiffs against the state of Texas are asking for a court order that could stop the enforcement of the laws on a permanent basis.

“Pregnant people in Texas and throughout the country have suffered unnecessary physical and emotional pain and harm, including loss of their fertility,” the lawsuit states, pointing out that the problem these five women are facing is not abstract or theoretical. Moreover, the lawsuit explains that the decision made in court will have real consequences for women who want to have an abortion in the country.

Like the vast majority of states with bans, Texas allows exceptions when the life of the pregnant woman is at risk. On the one hand, liberal activists claim that the $100,000 fines, along with the loss of medical licenses and prison sentences of up to 99 years have scared physicians into not providing abortions, even in cases where the law could allow them to. On the other hand, analysts believe that this whole case might be an effort to appeal to the American public opinion on abortion.

The Center for Reproductive Rights is a legal advocacy organization that pushes for abortion rights around the world through different types of litigation. This organization is a partner in a program named the Abortion Defense Network, which is a collaboration between numerous law firms that work to provide legal advice to those who are seeking abortions, and advocacy groups around the country.
