A New Fentanyl Vaccine Discovered
(AmericanProsperity.com) – The University of Houston (UH) recently accomplished a monumental feat that could help with America’s opioid epidemic. According to the university, more than 150 people die as a result of overdosing on synthetic opiates, including fentanyl, on a daily basis. However, UH may have developed a vaccine that will work against the lethal opioid.

UH posted its discovery in MDPI’s “Pharmaceutics” journal. The university created a vaccine that has the potential to block fentanyl, which is 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin, from making its way to a person’s brain. The discovery could eliminate the “high” people get from using the narcotic.
Fentanyl poses a more significant threat than other narcotics because people can combine it with other common street drugs including heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Illegal drug manufacturers can also form the deadly opioid into pills, making them appear as if they’re something else entirely such as Xanax. UH notes that only two milligrams is often enough to be lethal for a majority of people, only adding to its deadliness.
The vaccine could be a great tool for people looking for rehabilitation as it could serve as a relapse preventative. UH claims the inoculation didn’t seem to have any unwanted or adverse effects on test rats. The team that developed the game-changing drug is currently working on creating clinical-grade vaccines to conduct human trials. If the preventative works, it has the potential to save countless lives.
