Archaeologists discovered the sarcophagus at St. Nicholas Church in Antalya’s Demre district. It sits two meters long, buried beneath the church’s two-story annex.

The church was built in the 6th century CE by Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II specifically over what is believed to be Saint Nicholas’ resting place.

This effort represents part of “Legacy of the Future,” a project by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism led by associate professor Ebru Fatma Findik.

Until now, the exact resting place of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Greek bishop from Myra, remained a mystery.

But electronic surveys revealed gaps under the church floor, suggesting an ancient basilica’s remains were covered by newer constructions as the Mediterranean Sea rose.

Professor Findik emphasized the importance of finding inscriptions on the sarcophagus to clarify its contents.

This could confirm the burial site as the sacred area linked to historical records of Saint Nicholas.

Archaeological work around this site since 1989 hinted at the presence of a significant historical feature, but this discovery drastically changes the historical narrative.

“Our biggest hope is to find an inscription on the sarcophagus. This would help clarify the burial contents and allow us to determine the exact period it dates to,” professor Findik said.

Though bone fragments previously found in Bari and Venice were linked to the same individual, their identification as Saint Nicholas remains unresolved.

The newly discovered tomb may provide definitive answers if inscriptions support the claim.

Besides the sarcophagus, animal bones and clay lamp fragments were uncovered, indicating the significance of the site.

This discovery could draw more global attention to Turkey, already a cultural and historical tourism hub.

As the archaeological community delves into further excavations, the resolved mystery might enhance celebrations of the man behind Santa Claus.

Unseen links to Saint Nicholas’ legacy continue to inspire researchers dedicated to piecing together his storied life.

“The first church was submerged with the rise of the Mediterranean Sea, and some centuries later, a new church was built above. Now we have reached the remains of the first church and the floor on which Saint Nicholas stepped. The tiling of the floor of the first church, on which Saint Nicholas walked, has been unearthed,” stated Osman Eravsar, the head of the provincial cultural heritage preservation board in Antalya.

The sarcophagus, adorned with a handle atop its lid, might corroborate historical accounts, presenting a unique opportunity to substantiate the rich history and transformation of Saint Nicholas into the folklore legend known today.
