(AmericanProsperity.com) – Amazon has set the tone for package delivery, upping the game when it comes to fast deliveries. The company is taking it a step up from their two-day delivery promise to a same-day delivery process with the help of artificial intelligence.
Amazon is using this technology to optimize delivery routes and make more intelligent warehouse robots, while also creating better ergonomic environments for employees, according to Steve Armato, Amazon’s Vice President of Transportation Technology and Services.
Armato said during a tour of the largest California sort center that sixty percent of Prime orders during the month of March were delivered the same day or next day in metropolitan areas.
“It seems subtle, but at this scale, getting just one more product in the right spot means that it’s shipping less distance when you order it,” Armato said.
Four years ago Amazon began developing its models for demand forecasting and supply chain optimization which has helped them to achieve these short delivery periods, but generative AI could help bring it to the next level.
“Generative AI is the next big evolution in technology,” Armato said. “It’s remarkable, and we’re already applying it in very practical ways across our operations.”
There are some concerns around how AI could potentially bring on problems for the company as well. One issue could be energy needs of generative AI and its ability to enable robots to replace Amazon’s human workforce.
The amount of Amazon warehouse robots went from three hundred and fifty thousand to more than seven hundred and fifty thousand in two years, according to Amazon.
“Some of the two-day deliveries might stand aside, let the robot with a next-day delivery go on its mission first and take a straight line to its destination,” Armato said as he described how these robots work.
The next round of robots will be different from those now because they will be fully autonomous.
