(AmericanProsperity.com) – Highlighting the growing problem of foreign visitors disregarding local customs, an American tourist has sparked outrage for committing a disrespectful act at a sacred Japanese shrine.
65-year-old Steve Hayes was arrested for defacing Tokyo’s Meiji Jingu shrine, a revered site honoring Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken.
Hayes scratched five letters into a torii gate at the shrine, claiming it was a prank to write a family member’s name.
Shrine staff discovered the damage, which covered an area of 1.97 x 2.36 inches, and promptly alerted the police.
This act of vandalism is particularly terrible given the huge spiritual significance of torii gates in Shinto belief, where they serve as a sacred boundary between the human and divine realms.
Japanese authorities are taking a firm stance against such disrespectful behavior. A police spokeswoman stated that Hayes was arrested “on suspicion of damaging property.”
This incident is not isolated. Recently, graffiti with the kanji for “death” was drawn at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.
Other disturbing incidents at Yasukuni include spray-painting and public urination, for which a Chinese man was charged and others are wanted.
While a record-breaking influx of foreign visitors has boosted Japan’s economy, this tourism boom has come at a cost.
The weak yen has fueled an increase in international travelers but has also led to growing discontent among locals over disruptive tourist behavior.
The government’s ambitious goal of doubling its 2019 record by welcoming 60 million tourists annually in the next five to six years now faces scrutiny in light of these cultural clashes.
Some Japanese officials are taking proactive measures to address these issues. The mayor of Himeji has proposed charging foreigners higher entry fees to the city’s historic samurai-era castle.
By doing so, the city seeks to manage crowds and emphasize the value of cultural heritage.
Similarly, authorities have imposed admission fees and hiker limits on Mt. Fuji to battle overcrowding and littering caused by careless tourists.
These incidents highlight a broader issue of declining respect for traditional values and customs in Japan and globally.
As international travel becomes more accessible, visitors are urged to educate themselves about local customs and revere sacred sites.
