Blinken Warns Private Chinese Companies May Aid Russia

( – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on June 19 that the Biden administration called on China to take action against companies that are supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Blinken made these comments during a press conference in Beijing after having a face-to-face reunion with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping.

The Secretary of State told reporters that Washington formally asked Beijing to remain “vigilant in policing” that companies don’t sell sanctioned equipment to Russia. Blinken explained that most of these sanctioned materials end up being an important aid for the Russian military.

While the White House and its Western allies have imposed sanctions against the Kremlin, these have been undermined by some governments and companies. Different reports have shown these have allowed some exports of “dual-use” technologies to Moscow, which are repurposed for military means.

In the press conference, Blinken said Washington is concerned that many of these private companies that help the Kremlin are from China. He told reporters he expressed this concern to Chinese regime officials, urging them to take the proper steps as soon as possible. Despite these remarks, the secretary said the Chinese regime hasn’t violated its assurance to prevent providing lethal assistance to Moscow.

Blinken’s remarks came after a two-day summit in China, where he met with Xi Ping and the senior officials of the Chinese regime’s foreign ministry. The press conference raised controversy among Western leaders as Blinken said that Washington supports the “One China” policy. He even told reporters that the Biden administration doesn’t support “Taiwan independence.” However, Blinken also said that the United States will guarantee that the Asian island can “protect itself.” He added that a global “economic crisis” could erupt if China ends up invading Taiwan.

Following the Beijing summit, Blinken is next headed to the United Kingdom to attend the Ukraine Recovery Conference. The main goal of this event is to help Ukraine’s reconstruction.
