CA Defies SCOTUS – Pushes Abortion Like NEVER Before
(AmericanProsperity.com) – After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling that gave women across the nation access to abortions, some states planned to severely restrict or outright ban the practice. California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) declared the Golden State would be a sanctuary for abortions. The Democrat is living up to his pledge as California looks to potentially allocate millions of dollars to help women from other states get the controversial procedure.
Keeping His Word
When Governor Newsom originally restricted the use of California’s “Abortion Practical Support Fund” to in-state use only, the decision shocked pro-choice advocates. The Democrat appeared to be going back on his promise to women in red states that were banning abortions.
After weeks of lobbying Newsom, pro-choice advocates succeeded in convincing the governor to make California a safe haven for women looking to undergo the procedure. On August 26, the Democrat revealed an amendment to the state’s budget alongside legislative leaders. If lawmakers pass the bill, the change will allow California to use up to $20 million in taxpayer money to help out-of-state women travel to California to get abortions.
Jodi Hicks, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, noted to the Associated Press (AP) that the state’s lawmakers were working hard to expand its capacity to provide the procedure. She added that none of it mattered if they’re not also making sure patients get where they need to go. Hicks explained that many have to travel from their home states to receive abortions.
A Team Effort
A portion of the $20 million could go to Access Reproductive Justice, the only statewide abortion funding group in California. The organization usually helps around 500 women get access to abortions annually. According to the AP, Newsom is encouraging the public to help more. Alex Stack, the governor’s spokesperson, asserted the state is doing its part but can’t afford to do it all. He added that philanthropy and private donations will be crucial to the effort.
Newsom’s amendment comes as California, Oregon, and Washington have banned together to declare the American West Coast a “safe haven” for women seeking abortions. In June, Governors Kate Brown (D-ORO), Jay Inslee (D-WA), and Newsom announced the “Multi-State Commitment to Reproductive Freedom” in response to many of the nation’s Republican-run states heavily regulating abortions, with some choosing to ban the practice completely.
Governor Newsom released a statement following the announcement, claiming the Supreme Court wanted to strip away the rights of women and that the three states would be protecting their access to abortions.
