Congress Takes Up Bills to Target China and Chinese Companies

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Congress and lawmakers have been taking up a series of measures that are targeting Beijing in respect to their technology, biotech, and electric vehicles.

Washington currently views Beijing as their biggest geopolitical rival, and this legislation is ensuring that the United States wins in this competition. The bills that are scheduled for a vote are represented by both Republican and Democratic support, reflecting a strong consensus.

Representative John Moolenaar said that with this legislation they will be able to “take meaningful steps to counter the military, economic, and ideological threat of the Chinese Communist Party. There’s a bipartisan goal to win this competition.”

Advocacy groups have said they worry about the impact and warn that this could hurt Asian Americans and create “an atmosphere of guilt by association or fuel divisiveness,” according to Christine Chen, executive director of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington spoke out against this legislation saying that it was “new McCarthyism.” They said that if the bills are passed, then they “will cause serious interference to China-U.S. relations and mutually beneficial cooperation, and will inevitably damage the U.S.’s own interests, image and credibility,” according to spokesman Liu Pengyu.

The bills include efforts to reduce the U.S. reliance on Chinese biotech companies as well as banning Chinese electric vehicles and drones. It would also restrict Chinese nationals from buying farmland and would toughen up export restrictions.

One of the bills seeks to prevent anyone who receives federal money from working with five biotechnology companies with Chinese ties. Many supporters have said that this legislation is necessary to protect United States data, and it could reduce the country’s reliance on China for medical supplies.
