CrowdStrike Apologizes for Global IT Outage in Testimony

(AmericanProsperity.com) – A senior at CrowdStrike has apologized for causing a huge global outage that affected hospitals, payment systems, banks, airports, and personal computers across the globe in July.

The global outage occurred due to a malfunction in a software update, but it affected many areas like delaying flights, delaying medical procedures, and giving personal computers the “blue screen of death.” It crashed over eight million computer systems that were running Windows across the globe.

Adam Meyers, the Senior Vice-President for counter-advisart operations at Crowdstrike, spoke out as he testified in front of Congress this week. Meyers will also speak to the House of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection subcommittee. He has spoken about the company and how they’ve undertaken “a full review of our systems” in order to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.

“I am here today because, just over two months ago, in July, we let our customers down … On behalf of everyone at CrowdStrike, I want to apologize,” he said.

Meyers explained that the company is taking on full responsibility for the software crash that affected millions of people. “The July nineteenth incident stemmed from a confluence of factors that ultimately resulted in the Falcon sensor attempting to follow a threat-detection configuration for which there was no corresponding definition of what to do.”

He stated that they’ve made some changes that would prevent an outage from happening at this scale again. For example, they will no longer roll out their updates globally to all customers within a single session and they are allowing companies to select when they will receive their updates, so they can wait until an appropriate time.

Crowdstrike’s products are widely used across the globe and the company has stated that they work with more than half of America’s Fortune One Thousand companies as well, which shows how popular their services are and how this update affected millions.
