Senate Republicans Give Democrats a Taste of Their Own Medicine

(AmericanProsperity.com) – West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin lost all hope for a bipartisan effort in this year’s funding measure on September 27. The GOP, still bitter about his recent proposal to increase corporate taxes, pulled vital support for the American Energy Independence Act of 2022. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) had no choice but to move forward without the bill.

Manchin first angered his Republican peers in July, when he attempted to add the new provisions at the last minute. In addition to the 15% minimum corporate tax on high-earning businesses, the Democrat wanted to fund several additional climate control programs and grant Medicare better negotiating power with drug companies. Then, in August, Manchin voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, which lost him any remaining GOP support.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called Manchin’s proposal a “poison pill” that would have worsened the conditions it claimed to address. Instead, the Kentucky Republican hopes his peers might consider Sen. Shelley Moore Capito’s (R-WV) bill, which he and his team feels is “more comprehensive.” Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn said the Democrat brought the loss on himself by turning the bill into a partisan issue.

Still, the decision surprised Manchin. His legislation would have allowed the federal government to overrule the states in decisions regarding “energy transmission lines,” a proposition that had deeply concerned far-left lawmakers like Vermont independent Bernie Sanders.

Schumer’s decision to drop the American Energy Independence Act of 2022 also helped to avoid the possibility of a government shutdown, with the Senate’s funding vote now sure to pass without any issues.
