(AmericanProsperity.com) – Florida Republican Governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis criticized former President Donald Trump because of his Supreme Court picks. During a June 12 interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, DeSantis said that if becomes president, he will “do better” than the former commander-in-chief in picking justices.
It all started when Hewitt asked him if he could promise GOP voters that the judges he would pick could be as successful as the ones Trump nominated. DeSantis said that while he respects the three judges who the former president appointed, he said he will do “better than that.” He then explained that none of these three judges are “at the same level” as Justice Samuel Alito or Clarence Thomas, whom DeSantis described as “the gold standard.” However, he promised he will pick justices who are similar to them.
DeSantis’ comments raised controversy among conservatives, considering that Trump accomplished a 6-3 conservative majority at the Supreme Court because of his nominees. Trump appointed Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and Neil Gorsuch. All of them have a decent popularity among Republicans, and even some Democrats have said they are respectable justices. None are seen as radical, which is something that political analysts praised about Trump when he picked them.
What’s even more controversial about DeSantis’ claim is that this conservative majority allowed US conservatives to achieve some major legal victories. Two of the most important have been the expansion of gun and religious rights, and the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
Over the last few weeks, the Florida governor has been touting the records of Thomas and Alito, who were part of the Supreme Court before Trump’s presidency. He has also said that, if elected, he will expand the conservative majority in the Supreme Court even further, promising a 7-2 count in two presidential terms.
