(AmericanProsperity.com) – Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have an agreement with Moscow for the largest prisoner swap since the Cold War. Wall Street Journalist Evan Gershkovich and two other American prisoners are a part of this swap.
Gershkovich was released and met with Biden and Harris, as well as his mother as he stepped off the plane.
Gershkovich’s family said “We have waited 491 days for Evan’s release, and it’s hard to describe what today feels like.” .
They continued, “Most important now is taking care of Evan and being together again. No family should have to go through this.”
Kamala Harris said that this deal was an “extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy.”
There were sixteen total American, Russian, and German prisoners freed in exchange for eight Russians freed by Germany, the United States, Norway, Poland, and Slovenia. The prisoners that were sent back to Russia included undercover spies and a convicted FSB assassin that was being held in a prison in Germany.
The prisoner swap had been discussed for months of negotiations between the countries. It was pushed off as proposals were shot down and leaders of the countries could not come up with an agreement.
They finally came together in an agreed prisoner swap that ended up being the largest swap since the Cold War. Jake Sullivan, U.S. National Security Advisor, confirmed that Alexei Navanly was supposed to be a part of the swap prior to his death. Alexei Navanly was being held in Russia and was found dead in prison awaiting the possibility of being in a swap.
