Ex-Google CEO Funneled Money to the White House, Investigators Find

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has a ton of influence inside the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Internal emails obtained by Politico show that the tech billionaire’s reach is strong enough to draw red flags from watchdog groups.

Schmidt Futures, the billionaire’s charity, funneled money into OSTP by paying the salaries of at least two people who worked there. Politico says the 140-person office has a dozen officials under Schmidt’s influence. The billionaire maintained a heavy presence in the office under Biden’s former science chief, Eric Lander, who resigned in disgrace over ethics complaints.

Politico maintains that Schmidt’s interest in OSTC goes as far back as the Obama administration. Schmidt, who sits on the boards of a slew of tech companies, could stand to gain inside knowledge and influence policy. He also sits on the board of Abacus.AI, a data tech company that helps Democrat campaigns, Biden 2020 included.

Having someone that influential who obviously plays partisan politics in a White House office dedicated to science and technology policy could be potentially explosive. Unelected citizens who answer to nobody but themselves have no place in government.

Politico reports that the White House’s practice of allowing philanthropists to fund staffing is common and goes back decades. That doesn’t necessarily make it right.
