(AmericanProsperity.com) – Former Google engineers who founded Character.AI have rejoined Google along with other team members for a new artificial intelligence partnership. Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas are joining alongside other team members for Google’s DeepMind AI unit.
Character.AI uses large language models to allow users to create certain chatbots and interact with chatbots created by others. The company reached a one billion dollar valuation with the artificial intelligence boom that started last year. The company didn’t generate enough revenue to continue on, but they said that they would consider offering a subscription service in the future.
The founders left Google three years ago after Google allegedly “rebuffed” their attempts to develop a chatbot for Google. They went on to create Character.AI that same year and spoke against Google’s attempts in the artificial intelligence industry.
Freitas criticized Google saying that “There are some overlaps, but we’re confident Google will never do anything fun,” when referring back to Bard, which is now their Gemini chatbot.
In their partnership, Character.AI will provide Google with their nonexclusive license for its current LLM technology. “This agreement will provide increased funding for Character.AI to continue growing and to focus on building personalized AI products for users around the world,” the agreement stated.
“We’re particularly thrilled to welcome back Noam, a preeminent researcher in machine learning, who is joining Google DeepMind’s research team, along with a small number of his colleagues,” said a Google spokesperson.
This agreement comes at a time where there is a lot of competition in the artificial intelligence world and there is a race to create artificial intelligence models. Google has been criticized before about their slow pace when it comes to AI, and we have seen companies like OpenAI beat them to the top.
