Experts Are Split on Whether or Not Trump Will Go To Prison

( – Donald Trump has been the first former president to face criminal charges, and now experts are discussing what this may mean. Donald Trump could also potentially be the first president to be sentenced to prison time over his New York hush money conviction.

Trump has been convicted of over thirty counts of falsifying business records that were related to illegally influencing his previous election. Many experts have said that the odds are against Donald Trump serving any time behind bars before the election in November. However, some people feel that Trump’s careless behavior and attitude during the trial could leave Judge Juan Merchan to add prison time to his sentence.

Fourteen lawyers and law professionals spoke to ABC News about their thoughts on the situation and five of them believed that a prison sentence was likely; two said that it was a toss-up. The remaining seven thought that prison would not be on the table for him. Those who believed that he wouldn’t have a prison sentence said so because of logistical challenges, political implications of the sentencing, and a lack of precedent supporting incarceration for first-time offenders.

Experts have said that no matter what his actual sentence is, Trump will most likely continue with his appeal, which means that he would not have to face any sentencing until after the election as the appeal could take months to a year to complete.

Many have wondered how the former president would be charged as many have called it “election fraud, pure and simple,” but the judge charged him using New York’s least severe class of felonies.

Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a former chief assistant district attorney, said, “There is no more serious falsification of business records case that I can remember in the history of supervising and prosecuting many of these cases.”
