(AmericanProsperity.com) – Experts have spoken out about how artificial intelligence can transform terrorism and what this could mean. They’ve spoken about methods of delivering explosives and even improving their online recruiting techniques.
Antonia Marie De Meo, director of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, said, “The reality is that AI can be extremely dangerous if used with malicious intent.”
“With a proven track record in the world of cybercrime, it is a powerful tool that could conceivably be employed to further facilitate terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism,” she continued.
“Algorithms and Terrorism: The Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence for Terrorist Purposes” report said that law enforcement needs to stay on the cutting edge of AI to keep up with potential crime. Wrote De Meo, “It is our aspiration that this report is the beginning of the conversation on the malicious use of AI for terrorist purposes.”
The report expressed the difficulty of staying ahead of terrorists and tracking or predicting their use of AI. They will need to figure out how these terrorists can use AI, while also understanding how to stop them from doing that exact thing.
Studies, like the “Emerging Technologies and Terrorism: An American Perspective,” have spoken about how even basic AI like OpenAI’s ChatGPT can be used to “improve phishing emails, plant malware in open-coding libraries, spread disinformation and create online propaganda.”
The authors of the study wrote, “Cybercriminals and terrorists have quickly become adept at using such platforms and large language models in general to create deepfakes or chatbots hosted on the dark web to obtain sensitive personal and financial information or to plan terror attacks or recruit followers.”
AI’s uncertainty is feared, and the amount of power it can hold in certain circumstances, like terrorism, is something that experts are continually focusing on as it continues to advance.
