Fact Check: Is There a Hamas Compound in Alabama?

(AmericanProsperity.com) – According to a Check Your Fact December 8 article, the TikTok viral video that purported to show a compound of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas in Alabama was false. The fact-checker group noted that the video originally stemmed from a Sinclair Broadcast Group 2019 report about an alleged homegrown radical Islamist training camp in the so-called Yellowhammer state.

The text in the video, which garnered nearly 50,000 likes, said that Hamas was in Alabama and hiding “in plain sight.” The voice-over said that a military-style obstacle course that can be seen in the footage belonged to the terrorist group. The report said that the camp was led by Siraj Wahhaj and claimed it was located in Macon County. It also mentioned that it resembled a compound located in New Mexico.

In the explanation of how it fact-checked the report, Check Your Fact said that the report didn’t mention any link to the Palestinian terrorist group, and noted that a Sinclair Broadcast Group spokesman confirmed that the video was from 2019. The person said he didn’t understand why the report was being associated with the “current conflict” between the Israeli government and Hamas. Also, the group pointed out that neither the report nor a Department of Justice’s press release about Wahhaj mentioned any type of connection with the Palestinian terrorist group.

The DOJ’s press release noted that Wahhaj’s brother-in-law and two sisters were found guilty on numerous charges, including conspiracy to kidnap and to provide material support to terrorist groups. The press release added that Wahhaj and his family took his son Abdul Ghani to a New Mexico compound, where he eventually died.

According to an Associated Press report, 11 children were housed in that compound, including a 13-year-old boy who told authorities in court that he and many other children and teenagers received weapons and tactical training. Check Your Fact said that while the DOJ’s press release said that Wahhaj provided support to some terrorist organizations, it didn’t mention Hamas among these.
