Finland To Bury Nuclear Waste in Geological Tomb

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Finland has planned to bury nuclear fuel in the world’s first geological tomb where it will be stored for one hundred thousand years.

This project has been praised because of the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy and also as a “model for the entire world.” Either next year or in 2026, Finland will take highly radioactive fuel in watertight canisters and deposit it into bedrock four hundred meters below the forest. These canisters will be isolated and kept away from humans for thousands of years.

Onkalo is what they are calling the disposal facility, which means small cave or pit in Finnish. Posiva, a Finnish company, is going to be responsible for the final handling of the nuclear fuel.

Pasi Tuohimaa, head of communications for Posiva said, “Basically, the Onkalo project is that we are building an encapsulation plant and disposal facility for spent fuel. And it’s not temporary, it’s for good.”

Tuohimaa stated that this disposal technique received a lot of interest from industry players, especially, as he said, with the “nuclear renaissance” that has occurred over recent years.

Said Touhimaa, “Having a solution for the final disposal of spent fuel was like the missing part of the sustainable lifecycle for nuclear energy.”

There’s been some debate over the Onkalo project as some have wondered if anyone can guarantee the long-term safety of this nuclear waste. There’s also been debate on whether or not this would help the climate crisis.

Many have stated that nuclear energy has the potential to play a huge role in helping countries generate electricity while being able to slash emissions, which is a goal across the globe.
