Foreign Cyberattack Has Hit the US Justice Department

( – Cyberattacks became more prevalent as the coronavirus pandemic dragged on and people spent more time online, sharing information over the internet. The US government has not been immune to these threats, either. New information shared by the Department of Justice (DOJ) shows its email accounts were likely hacked by international cybercriminals.

On Wednesday, January 6, the DOJ shared a press release stating “previously unknown malicious activity” tied with the SolarWinds hacking last year was uncovered on December 24, 2020. Hackers likely accessed approximately 3% of the DOJ’s Microsoft Office 365 emails.

On Tuesday, January 5, a statement released by multiple government agencies states that the hacking was “likely Russian in origin.” The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) shared more on Twitter:

These ongoing attacks against our government are a threat to national security and our future as a nation. The malicious actors behind these cyberattacks must be stopped soon if we are to remain strong.
