Google Lays Off Hundreds Of Workers?!

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Google is cutting costs by laying off many of its workers who work in their hardware, voice assistance, and engineering departments. This seems to be a trend here as many different technology companies are doing major layoffs or have done them throughout 2023.

After this was announced, Google said in a statement that they were “responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.” Google continued, “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally.”

Google started by saying that they were downsizing and getting rid of a few hundred roles, which mainly stemmed from their augmented reality team. Just a year ago Google stated that it was planning to lay off 12,000 employees in the near future; this recent series of layoffs is the beginning of this plan.

Alphabet, which is the parent company of Google, has a union called the Alphabet Workers Union, and they have expressed their opinions on X regarding these layoffs.

The Alphabet Workers Union wrote on X saying, “Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe!”

Google, however, isn’t the only technology company cutting back as many different companies have undergone massive layoffs throughout the last year. Spotify came out in December saying that it would be getting rid of 17% of its workforce, while Meta recently laid off more than 20,000 people. Amazon also laid off hundreds of people in its Prime Video departments and plans to lay off even more of its workers in the next year.

As the fight between technology companies continues, we are seeing many layoffs in departments that have less significance in comparison to the development of Artificial Intelligence, a field where many companies are fighting to be the frontrunner.
