(AmericanProsperity.com) – Are American politicians getting too old and, to put it kindly, perhaps a little past their best in terms of running the country? Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley thinks so. She’s just called for mental tests for elderly politicians.
In her presidential campaign launch speech, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, calls for term limits for Congress and "mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old." https://t.co/BhM97NHxnN pic.twitter.com/Bm7Pdj2Y3u

Haley, who just announced her candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, launched her campaign with a February 15 rally in Charleston, South Carolina. One of her key points was that the US has given old men enough chances at running the country, and it’s time for a younger generation of Republicans to take the lead. Some people are interpreting her words as a swipe at her one-time boss and now rival candidate, former president Donald Trump — but the 51-year-old ex-governor of South Carolina might have a point.
Hayley wants politicians over the age of 75 to be forced to take mental competency tests to stay in office. Trump would certainly be affected by that — he’s 76 — but so would President Biden, who turned 80 last November. Few individuals would argue that Biden is at the peak of his mental powers. He’s always had a reputation for gaffes, but he seems to be increasingly confused and prone to bizarre behavior. Senators have also been growing worried over the mental state of 89-year-old Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who finally gave in to growing pressure on February 14 and announced that she wouldn’t run for re-election in 2024. However, she’s still refusing to step down early despite her increasingly obvious mental decline.
At the Charleston rally Haley told the crowd, “In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire.” As well as mental fitness tests, the 51-year-old Republican called for term limits to Congress to prevent elderly politicians clinging to seats for decades. If Biden wins again next year, he’ll be 82 by the time he’s inaugurated and 86 when his second term ends. Are the American people happy to let a visibly deteriorating 86-year-old run the whole country? Haley is hoping we’re not.
