Health Chief Says Biden Will Fight Texas Abortion Pill Ban

( – Biden administration’s Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said during a Sunday interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” that President Joe Biden is willing to do whatever it takes to fight the controversial Texas abortion pill ban, which was ruled last week and it prohibits the distribution and prescription of mifepristone. This situation raised anger among Democrats and pro-choice activists since this is one of the two medications that have been used for medicated abortions in the country for over two decades.

When host Dana Bash asked Becerra if the Biden administration considered having the Food and Drug Administration ignore this prohibition, the health chief said that “everything is on the table.” The secretary also said that President Biden has already made clear that the White House will take action on this matter since it considers this prohibition to be wrong. The Food and Drug Administration appealed this decision to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals that same day.

On Friday, a Texas federal judge blocked the approval of the abortion pill, which gives the White House a week to properly appeal and seek emergency relief before the ruling is officially enacted.

That same Friday, a Washington state federal judge blocked this agency from changing the “status quo and rights” as it relates to Mifepristone’s availability. This situation took place after 17 US states and even Washington, D.C. decided to file a lawsuit, arguing that this pill was too regulated.

About this issue, the Biden administration’s health chief said that the president will take this fight to the court, pointing out he believes that the Biden administration will prevail. When asked if he was somehow worried about the Supreme Court issuing a ruling on the prohibition of this abortion pill, considering its conservative majority, Becerra explained that the justice’s role is to simply apply the law to the evidence and the facts available.
