(AmericanProsperity.com) – Schools and libraries across the country have been facing attempts to remove books from shelves on accusations that they contain explicit or sexual references.
A new survey has shown what Americans really think about these book bans and restrictions. The American Library Association documented over four thousand unique book titles that were targeted for censorship. These efforts have increased as legislators continue to censor topics like race, sex, and gender.
A study done by the Knight Foundation has found that two-thirds of Americans oppose efforts to restrict books in libraries. Sixty-two percent of Americans oppose their state legislating what content is allowed in the school books.
Public school parents are more likely to be in favor of book restrictions, but more than half of parents still oppose them. Seven percent of parents with a reading-age child reported their children reading books that were inappropriate.
Many classroom or library restrictions are related to concerns about what is necessarily deemed appropriate for certain ages.
Six in ten people saw age appropriateness as a good enough reason to restrict a student’s book access. The study also found that seventy-eight percent of adults trust that their schools are picking appropriate books for students to read.
Only three percent of people have really taken part in the debate, and Conservatives make up over fifty percent of those who support book restrictions. However, Conservatives are less likely to feel politically represented in public school books.
