How Hidden Hotel Junk Fees Affect Travelers

(AmericanProsperity.com) –When it comes to booking a hotel stay, junk, resort, destination, and amenity fees are often unexpected charges added to your bill.

According to the Council of Economic Advisers, these fees add up to over three billion dollars that Americans have had to pay over a year. The Biden Administration has been trying to tackle junk fees entirely, but they are still popping up often, especially in hotels.

Clint Henderson, Managing Editor at The Points Guy, said, “The consumer is the loser.”

Many have said that the value of what’s provided has diminished as consumers are paying high prices for amenities like phone calls, Wi-Fi, towels, beach access, parking, and breakfast.

Henderson stated in defense of consumers, “The consumer can only take so much of these fees before they break.” He continued to say that this could make vacation travel nearly impossible for some.

On average, people can expect to spend about thirty-eight dollars more per night just because of resort fees according to an analysis from NerdWallet.

There has been what experts are calling “fee fatigue” among Americans, and it has led to scrutiny among federal and state representatives.

Last month, the House of Representatives passed a No Hidden FEES Act which would have federal guidelines regarding the transparency of hidden costs, and the Federal Trade Commission would pursue those who violate this Act.

During President Biden’s State of the Union Address this past February, he said, “Americans are tired of being played for suckers.”

Critics have said that price clarity does help some people but that this clearly doesn’t eliminate the junk fees at all and only makes people aware of them.
