(AmericanProsperity.com) – The Pentagon is about to face a reckoning as President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team will seek accountability over the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal.
Trump’s team is considering court-martialing senior military officers involved in the 2021 debacle, which Trump has called “the most embarrassing day in the history of our country.”
Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Matt Flynn leads the initiative as part of a broader review of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan.
The team is reportedly compiling a list of current and former military officers who could face severe charges, including treason, for their roles in the withdrawal fiasco.
Pete Hegseth, who is rumored to be Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense, has widely criticized the withdrawal.
“The next president of the United States needs to radically overhaul Pentagon senior leadership to make us ready to defend our nation and defeat our enemies,” Hegseth stated.
“Lots of people need to be fired. The debacle in Afghanistan, of course, is the most glaring example,” he added.
The Biden-Harris administration executed the withdrawal, which was marred by chaos and tragedy.
The deadly attack at Kabul’s Abbey Gate and a mistaken U.S. strike that killed civilians stand out as glaring failures.
Republican lawmakers have labeled the operation as “failed,” pointing to the quick collapse of the Afghan government and military as evidence of gross incompetence.
Even though the Biden-Harris administration bears the brunt of the blame, a 2022 SIGAR review implicated both the Trump and Biden administrations in the chaotic exit.
However, the execution of the withdrawal falls squarely on Biden’s shoulders and the military leadership that carried out his orders.
Trump’s team is considering recalling commanders to active duty to face charges, a move that would send shockwaves through the military establishment.
Critics and establishment figures are already attempting to downplay the seriousness of this initiative.
However, their attempts to discredit the effort only serve to highlight the interests that have long protected leadership at the expense of national security.
