With Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi behind bars for causing panic, questions arise about his immigration status and the government’s effective handling of such threats.

A routine traffic stop escalated into a large-scale emergency on Interstate 85 in Greenville County.

Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi, a truck driver from Oak Lawn, was pulled over for a missing trailer license plate.

The situation took a critical turn when Alhendi claimed a bomb was in his vehicle, prompting immediate action.

The alleged threat forced local police, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the FBI to shut down all highway lanes.

Extensive investigations followed, uncovering no explosives in the truck.

Law enforcement’s swift response aimed to protect public safety amid a false threat.

Authorities arrested Alhendi, who now faces charges, including conveying false information about a bomb threat.

The shutdown, spanning nearly five hours, caused severe traffic delays near Mile Marker 44.

Interstate 85 reopened around 7:40 p.m., reinstating order.

“The officer asked the individual, ‘Do you have anything illegal in here? Like marijuana? Cocaine?’ And Alhendi said, ‘I have a small bomb,’ and then, she said, ‘What?’ And then he said, ‘I have a small bomb.’ This is on her body camera and in-car camera,” revealed 13th Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins, cited by WYFF 4.

While Alhendi holds a clean driving record and a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Globe Transportation confirmed compliance with DOT regulations, addressing concerns over driver qualifications.

Yet, the key issue remains Alhendi’s legal status in the U.S.

The South Department of Public Safety emphasized the seriousness of the threat, stating, “On January 2, 2025, at approximately 2:45 p.m., a SC State Transport Police officer initiated a traffic stop on a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 in Greenville County, due to a missing license plate on the trailer… All six lanes of I-85 were subsequently shut down as the threat was investigated by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, SLED, and the FBI.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Alhendi, revealing he entered the U.S. legally in 2018 but failed to comply with admittance terms.
