(AmericanProsperity.com) – Since he started campaigning, President Joe Biden pushed for a quick path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants. On his first day in office, he used an executive order to outline his hopes for future legislation. This week, Democrats made his wish come true as they introduced the US Citizenship Act of 2021.
Understanding the US Citizenship Act
First and foremost, the new bill, proposed by Senator Bob Menedez (D-NJ) and Representative Linda Sanchez (D-CA), will provide an eight-year timeline to citizenship for illegal immigrants who were in the country by January 1, 2021.
The bill also allows immigrants who came as children, commonly called “Dreamers,” and those that have been working on farms for years to immediately receive permanent resident status and have an expedited path to citizenship.
To no one’s surprise, the Left is also changing the wording of the law, replacing instances of the word “alien” with “non-citizen.” The bill will also send money to Central America to combat drug-related issues and increase the technology budget at the US-Mexico border.
Democrats May Try Reconciliation to Pass the Bill
Most Republicans disagree with the plan to give citizenship to millions of people who broke our federal laws. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) likened the bill to providing “blanket amnesty” to millions.
However, with a 50-50 split in the Senate, it’s unlikely the bill would get the 60 votes needed to pass. So, some Democrats are advocating Congress use reconciliation to pass the bill. This would only occur if 50 senators voted in favor of the bill and Vice President Kamala Harris broke the tie.
Senator Menendez is Hoping for a Major Overhaul
If this bill is passed, it would mean an enormous overhaul of the immigration system. On Thursday, February 18, Senator Menedez acknowledged at a press conference that there may be negotiations on the bill moving forward, but, for now, keeping it as one large bill is “the righteous thing.”
Covering up previous holes in our immigration policy by providing easy citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants will likely only encourage more to break federal law and try to sneak across our borders. While we understand the pull of the American dream, it only works well when everyone pursues it legally.
