Judge Drops 3rd Degree Murder Charges Against Former Officer Derek Chauvin

(AmericanProsperity.com) – The May 25 death of George Floyd drew worldwide attention. The video of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes made its way around social media, sparking nationwide protests. This week, a judge dropped one charge against Chauvin, but let multiple others stay.

On Wednesday, October 21, Judge Peter Cahill dropped the third-degree murder charge against Chauvin because it’s only for situations where the defendant’s actions are not targeted at a specific person and instead endanger other people.

So, because Floyd was the sole target of Chauvin’s actions, the third-degree charge cannot stand. Chauvin still faces charges for second-degree unintentional murder and second-degree manslaughter. The differences in these charges can be seen here:

In addition, six more charges against other officers involved will stand as they face trial in the coming months.

News site AJ+ broke down what that could mean for Chauvin:

In a world where seeking justice is not as easy as we would often like, it brings hope to those hurting when the legal process works as it should. As this case moves to trial, we must trust in the American legal system and the selected jury to decide the fate of these former officers.
