Katie Porter: The Dark Horse Challenger for Feinstein's Senate Seat

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Speculation emerged that California Senator Dianne Feinstein (D) might not run again in 2024 after the Los Angeles Times reported in December 2022 that the lawmaker remained undecided on the matter. On January 11, Representative Katie Porter (CA-D) announced her bid for the position, which may or may not be up for grabs at the end of the current term.

Porter currently represents the 47th Congressional District in Orange County. She serves as chair of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, vice chair of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, and as a member of both the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

Although Porter identifies as a Democrat, she holds several moderate views that could help her on both sides of the political aisle if she does face any opposition. For example, she believes in the necessity of border security and clear-cut policies on immigration while agreeing all human beings deserve a measure of dignity. She’s also a firm advocate of strengthening capitalism in America, but the lawmaker feels crackdowns on Big Pharma, Big Tech, corporate monopolies, and mega-mergers are equally necessary aspects in improving the country’s financial health.

Additionally, Porter boasts her position as only one of 10 Congress members who refuses to take PAC or corporate lobby money. She opposes earmarks, which insert lawmakers’ personal agendas into legislation. Porter is also firmly against allowing members and family members of Congress to trade stocks — a position that starkly contrasts with Feinstein’s husband’s past unreported stock purchases.

Feinstein told the Los Angeles Times she would likely announce whether she was running again “by spring.” Should the 89-year-old lawmaker decide to defend her seat, her dark horse challenger will likely give the long-standing senator a real run for her money.

Other possible contenders for the position include Democrat Representatives Adam Schiff, Barbara Lee, and Ro Khanna, according to The Hill.
