Massive Earthquake Kills 1000 In Afghanistan

Tragedy Strikes In Afghanistan – Leaves Thousands Dead

( – On June 22, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 hit the Khost and Paktika provinces in Afghanistan. Sadly, the natural disaster killed more than 1,000 people and injured at least 1,500 more, but authorities expect those numbers to increase. The head of information in the Paktika province, Muhammad Amin Hafiza, said that some local families “completely vanished.”

The quake’s epicenter was on the country’s eastern shore, with some feeling the effects as far as Kabul. Chief spokesman for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the group plans to help the disaster’s victims.

The regional director for the Afghan Red Crescent Society, Mawlawi Elyas Nasiri, reported ambulances filled with rescuers were driving around looking for victims to help. The director believes there may be people stuck under the rubble of fallen buildings and homes, which are poorly constructed and prone to collapse. Many people in the area were already digging with their hands, hoping to save the quake victims.

United Nations agencies are also mobilizing to help with the effort by bringing medical supplies and resources to the affected area. Unfortunately, landslides have blocked some roads, making it difficult to travel to some places where people may need assistance.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced President Joe Biden is keeping an eye on the situation and will deploy help where necessary.
