(AmericanProsperity.com) – In an effort to defy federal law and undermine national security, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is rushing to establish the city as a sanctuary for illegals.
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, Bass and her liberal allies are scrambling to shield illegals from deportation, prioritizing their interests over those of law-abiding citizens.
Specifically, the Los Angeles City Council is working to fast-track a law declaring Los Angeles a “sanctuary city” for illegals following Trump’s outstanding election victory.
This move comes as part of a broader effort by California Democrats to obstruct the incoming administration’s plans to enforce immigration laws and secure the border.
The proposed sanctuary city law would prevent federal immigration officials from accessing city databases and using city resources for immigration enforcement.
Mayor Bass actually expressed surprise that Los Angeles was not already officially designated as a sanctuary city.
“I was actually surprised about that because I thought we were a sanctuary city for years,” Bass stated.
“We will stand with the immigrant community and whatever policy they put forward, we will make sure that people in Los Angeles are not hurt and families are not separated,” she added.
Bass’ policies to protect illegals come at a time when Los Angeles voters have shown their discontent with soft-on-crime policies, having voted out District Attorney George Gascon.
The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) has criticized sanctuary policies, highlighting the dangers they pose to public safety.
CIS spokesperson Jon Feere explained, “At its core, a sanctuary policy is a prohibition on information-sharing between local and federal law enforcement, for the benefit of criminals who have no authority to be in the United States.”
While Bass and her allies prioritize protecting illegals, President-elect Trump has proposed strict immigration policies, including completing the border wall and ending birthright citizenship.
Governor Gavin Newsom also prepares to oppose the upcoming Trump administration.
He has announced an emergency special session to Trump-proof the state by strengthening California’s legal response to potential federal actions.
Newsom is focusing on what he calls “civil rights” and “immigrant family protections,” which critics say are code words for obstructing federal immigration enforcement.
