TMZ initially reported on the incident before it went viral. The video does show Tyson punching another passenger; however, the passenger wasn’t innocent, either, as they had been provoking the boxer. TMZ reported that Tyson was nice about it at first, asking the other passenger, Melvin Townsend, to “chill.” But instead of listening to the warning, Townsend had to learn the hard way and continued to instigate the boxer before Tyson finally stood up and attacked.
During a session of the “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson” podcast, the former heavyweight champion explained Townsend was messing with the boxer, even after Tyson agreed to take pictures with him.
Steve Wagstaff, the District Attorney of San Mateo County, asserted his office wouldn’t be pressing charges against Tyson, now 55, citing the decision came after reviewing the footage. In addition, Townsend himself declared he didn’t want to press charges according to a Fox News report. As it turns out, the DA didn’t press charges against either party.
