Specifically, federal employees across various agencies received an unexpected email from Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency.
The message was clear: report your work accomplishments from the past week by tonight or consider yourself resigned.
This decisive action aligns with President Trump’s commitment to streamline government and eliminate waste.
Posted on X (formerly Twitter), Musk’s directive instructed federal employees to list approximately five accomplishments and cc their manager, with a strict deadline of Monday at 11:59 pm EST.
“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” Musk wrote.
The email reached workers in agencies such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the CDC, and even some judiciary employees despite not being part of the executive branch.
President Trump, a staunch supporter of Musk’s efforts, emphasized the need to remove inefficient bureaucrats and make the government more efficient.
“We’re removing all of the unnecessary, incompetent and corrupt bureaucrats from the federal workforce,” Trump declared.

The administration’s efforts to reduce government spending have already led to significant changes, with approximately 75,000 federal employees taking buyouts amid news of potential layoffs.
Some reports suggest that the number of federal employees laid off could exceed 100,000.
Musk claimed that many government employees are not working efficiently and suggested there might be fraud in government payrolls.

In response, unions and bureaucrats are up in arms about this measure. American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelly criticized the move as “cruel” and “disrespectful” to federal employees.
“Once again, Elon Musk and the Trump Administration have shown their utter disdain for federal employees and the critical services they provide to the American people,” Kelly said.
