Central to this election is a core debate: should the Church continue Francis’ pastoral approach, or return to traditional principles?

The outcome could redefine the Church’s leadership in an increasingly secular world.

The Conclave, tasked with electing the 267th Pope, follows the Novemdiales Masses dedicated to Pope Francis.

Originally scheduled earlier, the conclave’s start was postponed to foster effective dialogue among the cardinals.

Convening in Vatican City, approximately 180 cardinals will participate, of which over 120 are electors.

The setting is solemn and steeped in tradition, taking place within the hallowed Sistine Chapel.

The process starts with a sacred Eucharistic celebration, followed by a votive Mass Pro Eligendo Papa.

Each cardinal elector swears an oath of secrecy, ensuring the integrity of the voting process.

The phrase “extra omnes” is declared to clear all but the remaining electors from the chapel, marking the commencement of closed deliberations.

The challenging role ahead for the new pope is underscored by remarks from British Cardinal Vincent Nichols: “The role of the pope is to essentially hold us together and that’s the grace we’ve been given from God,” cited by AP News.

A year filled with high stakes and anticipation, the conclave reflects considerable ideological debates.

Whereas some church leaders urge continuity with Pope Francis’s reforms, others advocate returning to traditional core doctrines.

Decisions hinge on a two-thirds majority vote, with structured procedures if an immediate decision isn’t reached to allow for reflection and prayer.

The newly elected pope will be asked, “Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?” marking his transition into leadership.

Post-election, the new pope chooses a papal name and gains full authority, symbolized by the announcement, “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; Habemus Papam,” from the Cardinal Proto-Deacon.

Indeed, the conclave is not merely a religious event, but a reflection of shifting dynamics within the Catholic Church, as debates on reforms and traditions continue to challenge its path.
