On January 3, Hamlin was playing in the Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. After a tackle on Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, he tried to stand up but suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed instead. The survival rate for cardiac arrests occurring outside of hospitals is just 10%, but Hamlin was one of the lucky ones; medics used CPR to get his heart beating again and rushed him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
On Tuesday morning, Hamlin’s marketing agent, Jordon Rooney, spoke to journalists about the player’s condition. He said Hamlin’s vital signs were back in the normal range, and doctors were running tests on him. He confirmed Hamlin had been conscious earlier, but his healthcare team had sedated him. He added Hamlin is “fighting. He’s a fighter.” Rooney also said Hamlin’s “remarkable” family remains supportive and in good spirits.
Although often confused with a heart attack, heart disease doesn’t always cause cardiac arrest. Around 15-25% of cases have other causes, including trauma — such as a blow received during a tackle.
CBS News’s medical expert, Dr. David Agus, thinks Hamlin had the bad luck to suffer an impact to his chest at exactly the right stage in his heartbeat for the blow to shock his heart into arrhythmia, meaning it wasn’t pumping blood anymore. Agus said more details of his condition should emerge as medics withdraw support and let him breathe on his own. He also said there was a good chance the arrhythmia didn’t stop blood flow to his brain long enough to cause any damage because treatment started immediately.
