(AmericanProsperity.com) – In a selfish move, union-backed airport workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport are threatening to disrupt millions of Americans’ Thanksgiving plans.
Specifically, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has launched a strike during one of the busiest travel weeks.
The strike involves ABM and Prospect Airport Services employees who handle essential operations like cleaning and passenger support.
These workers claim they are protesting “poverty wages” and seeking more respect on the job despite already earning between $12.50 and $19 an hour for entry-level positions.
The union organizers’ calculated move to strike during the Thanksgiving rush is an attempt to maximize disruption and make the most out of their demands.
The timing of this strike is particularly alarming as it fell on the Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s busiest holiday travel season to date.
Over 1 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport, many of whom are now at risk of having their plans upended by this union-led action.
“We’re on strike today because this is our last resort. We can’t keep living like this,” said ABM cabin cleaner Priscilla Hoyle. “We’re taking action because our families can’t survive.”
The striking workers plan to hold a rally and a “Strikesgiving” lunch, claiming many cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal.
Critics of the strike argue that the union organizers’ narrative ignores the fact that these jobs are not supposed to be career positions but rather entry-level opportunities often filled by students or part-time workers.
ABM and Prospect Airport Services have acknowledged the situation’s seriousness and said they were committed to minimizing disruptions.
Prospect Airport Services representative Suzanne Mucklow stated the company “is proud to provide higher wages, experienced leadership, and comprehensive benefits to all our employees, including the dedicated team members working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.”
“We prioritize consistent and transparent communication with all our employees, ensuring they receive fair compensation and robust career advancement opportunities,” she added.
However, the damage to holiday travel plans may already be done, leaving countless families to bear the brunt of this ill-timed strike.
