Experts Say Osteoarthritis is More Common Than We Think

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects every person, mostly as we age we can experience symptoms related to it.

Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear to the protective layer of cartilage on our bones. Cartilage helps our bones to slide together smoothly but as the wear and tear continues, cartilage starts to diminish, and the pain from your bones rubbing is the pain you would feel with Osteoarthritis.

Dr. Vinay K. Aggarwal, who is a hip and knee reconstruction specialist from NYU Langone’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, spoke out about Osteoarthritis and what we know about it. Dr. Aggarwal said that he would hear patients say “I know I have arthritis everywhere” and he says that this is essentially what’s going on in their body.

Osteoarthritis is oftentimes most common in the hip joints, which can cause hip and groin pain. It’s also common in your knee joints as well, which can cause knee pain on the front, back, and sides.

Some factors that affect Osteoarthritis and its onset can be anything from our genetics to how we age, which are not in our control at all. However, some factors are in our control such as weight management, diet, exercise, and substance use like smoking.

If you’re dealing with symptoms from Osteoarthritis you have a few options like anti-inflammatory medication that can help lower the pain of your arthritis. Although this can treat symptoms and pain, there is no cure or medications that can help slow the progression or stop the progression of Osteoarthritis.

In severe cases, the choice of surgery is an option. There are two main ways that surgery can go for Osteoarthritis and one way is a minimally invasive surgery, while the other consists of a joint replacement. The nature of your Osteoarthritis and how severe it is will depend on which option is best for your particular case.
