Pelosi Eyes New Income Model

( – Congress and President Donald Trump are currently talking about a Phase 4 stimulus bill. As part of the discussion, they’re considering another direct payment to Americans. On Monday, April 27th, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took it a step further and said it might be time to consider a minimum guaranteed income during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The idea of universal basic income was first floated by then-Democratic presidential hopeful Andrew Yang last fall. As the economy worsens and people remain out of work due to state-induced business closures, left-wing lawmakers are calling for the government to disburse more money to Americans. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has called for a $2,000 monthly payment per family, plus $1,000 per child.

The idea is being criticized, with detractors saying it’s too expensive.

The Congressional Budget Office recently said the 2020 fiscal spending would already be an incredible $3.7 trillion. Also, the federal debt will be 101% of GDP by the end of the fiscal year in September. Pelosi appeared to acknowledge those concerns. She said Congress has to recognize the realities of what is and is not possible, and if a temporary UBI would work.

One thing is certain: Democrats never shy away from taking advantage of a good crisis to enact left-wing policies if they can get away with it.
