Poll Reveals Americans Name Government as Top Concern

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Last year, the economy was the biggest worry for most Americans, but it recently lost its place at the top spot. Still, the news won’t be much comfort for President Joe Biden or lawmakers. This time the country isn’t most concerned about the nation’s economic outlook — because their most significant issue is with the government.

At the end of 2022, a Gallup poll found that inflation and the economy, in general, were tied as voters’ biggest worries, with 16% citing each as their top concern. Gallup has run the same poll again, and the results don’t look good for Congress and the Biden administration.

The percentage of voters worried about the economy, in general, has fallen to 10%, while inflation is still more of an issue, with 15% ranking it as their biggest concern. The runaway winner, with 21% of Americans agreeing, is that “the most important problem facing this country today” is the government.

Conservatives are most worried about the government, with 24% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents naming a lack of leadership from Washington, DC, as their biggest concern. It’s also the biggest worry for Democrats, with 18% highlighting the issue. Interestingly, approval ratings for Biden (41%) and Congress (21%) haven’t changed much over the last year — but Americans seem to be getting more worried about where their elected officials are leading the country.

The new poll was taken from January 2 to 22, and that period took place during two events that could have increased people’s worries about the US government. One, most likely to have concerned Democrats, was the drawn-out process of electing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as House Speaker. The other, more serious, issue was the emerging scandal of President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents. With the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees now investigating the document scandal, and a special counsel appointed by the Justice Department, Americans aren’t likely to regain their trust in the government anytime soon.
