Poll Shows Republican Voters Are Less Confident in Spotting Deepfakes

(AmericanProsperity.com) – A new poll suggests that one in four registered voters have strong confidence in their ability to tell the difference between real and artificial intelligence-generated content.

Responses to a poll asking about artificial intelligence in politics showed broad concerns throughout both Democrats and Republicans about the influence of technology over the upcoming election. The survey was conducted by UK-based firm Savanta. This was originally commissioned in response to Donald Trump posting deepfakes of Taylor Swift endorsing him on Truth Social.

Research analyst Ethan Granholm at Savanta said, “This is a very real problem, and one that voters want social media companies to grapple with.”

Thirty-five percent of Democrats said that they were only slightly confident to correctly judge the content. On the other hand, forty-five percent of Republicans said that they were not at all or slightly confident they could correctly judge the content.

One-fourth of registered voters said that they were disappointed with the former president sharing these artificial intelligence-generated images of Taylor Swift. This included twenty-three percent of Republicans that answered these survey questions.

Said Granholm, “Former President Trump disappointed and concerned a significant proportion of his voters when he shared false imagery suggesting he had Taylor Swift’s endorsement.”

Many people asked that people should label the AI content as such, but one in four people wanted a complete ban on it. Deepfakes and misinformation spread by AI have become a huge problem, especially during election times.
