(AmericanProsperity.com) – Cyberattacks have become more prominent over the past few months, from the Colonial Pipeline hack last month to the SolarWinds attack earlier this year. According to the US government, Russian criminal groups are usually to blame. But, after a new hack occurred last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now under investigation.
Meat Processing Company Crippled by Ransomware
On Tuesday, June 1, the White House detailed that JBS, the world’s largest meat processing company, was hit by a ransomware attack that crippled operations in Canada, the US, and Australia.
Shortly after the attack, JBS said the cybercriminals who carried out the attack are “likely based in Russia,” and the FBI agreed with those hunches on Wednesday, attributing the attack to “REvil and Sodinokibi,” a Russian-based hacking group that goes by both names.
White House to Address Growing Threat of Cyber Attacks
On Tuesday, June 1, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that US officials are “engaging directly” with the Russian government about the attacks to let them know that “responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals.”
The following day, President Joe Biden said he’s “looking closely” into Russia’s involvement with the recent cyber crimes and will bring up concerns over the disruptive attacks at a summit in mid-June.
Would Putin Ever Fess Up to Such a Crime?
While President Biden and his team will likely put pressure on Russia to get their cybercriminals under control, it’s unlikely Putin would ever confess to his involvement or approval.
On Wednesday, House Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX) told Fox News that Americans “cannot” separate Putin from his country’s “criminal organizations,” and that while the Russian president may not have given direct approval for the attack, he “certainly” provided some kind of approval. McCaul also said the attacks were “absolutely” a way of testing President Biden.
Biden Must Address Cyber Crime
Cybercrime is a growing issue in our modern world, as hackers are able to cripple enormous organizations and steal sensitive information. President Biden has a responsibility to this nation to help stop these attacks, so hopefully, our national intelligence forces can get to the bottom of just who these hackers are and who they take their orders from.
