GOP Senators Announce a Religious Liberty Amendment to Marriage Bill

( – Senator Mike Lee and 13 other lawmakers submitted an amendment in hopes of improving H.R. 8404, the Respect for Marriage Act before it goes to a vote. The seven-page document is an effort to protect the religious freedoms of individuals and institutions adhering to traditional definitions of marriage. Specifically, proponents want to ensure the protection of LGBTQ+ groups doesn’t come at the expense of Christian organizations that might like to voice their objections to same-sex marriages.

Lee and the other legislators behind the proposed amendment fear passing the Respect for Marriage Act, as it currently stands, could open the doors for discrimination against religious groups. The representatives want to ensure faith-based institutions don’t risk losing funding or tax breaks over individuals in their groups being vocal against non-traditional unions.

The Respect for Marriage Act, introduced in July by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), would redefine “marriage” to encompass same-sex spouses on a federal level. The text would also protect against states refusing to observe out-of-state marriages based on sex, national origin, race, or ethnicity.

The bill’s proponents insist it’s a safeguard against a potentially slippery slope set forth by the Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Conversely, religious advocates see H.R. 8404 as a means to muzzle people who continue to hold traditional marriage values.
