(AmericanProsperity.com) – Russia and Ukraine have exchanged over one hundred prisoners of war from each side with help from the United Arab Emirates as an intermediary.
This is the first exchange since Ukraine launched an attack on Russia’s Kursk region in the beginning of the month. This also took place while Ukraine celebrated thirty-three years of independence from the Moscow-based Soviet Union.
The Russian soldiers that were released are now in Belarus, and they will receive necessary medical treatment and rehabilitation as they return back to Russia. The Russian defense ministry thanked the UAE for their role in facilitating their prisoner swap agreement.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukrainian president, posted a photo with himself and the Ukrainian prisoners that were released as they hugged each other. The UAE said that the total number of captives that have been exchanged through mediation efforts now sits above one thousand seven hundred people.
This is the seventh exchange mediated by the UAE since Russia invaded Ukraine. The United Arab Emirates says that their ability to speak with a range of international actors means that they can mediate between parties effectively while pushing for cooperation.
Kyiv said that it carved out a buffer zone in an area where Russian attacks were mounted. Zelenskiy has spoken out to thank Ukrainian troops that helped replenish the prisoners exchanged in the agreement.
Just recently, Zelenskiy passed a law that would allow Ukraine to join the International criminal court. This law would be another step in moving Ukraine into the European Union.
