(AmericanProsperity.com) – American families continue to battle inflation and high prices, especially on groceries, which has forced some difficult decisions when it comes to their shopping habits. Many Americans have been sticking to cheaper foods including sausage as they cut back on more expensive meat choices.
Kelly Lester, a policy analyst for the Center for Food, Power & Life at the John Locke Foundation, said, “People at the end of the day are trading down right now. Budgets are strained and people are really feeling the effects of the last few years of inflation when it comes to the grocery store.”
The Texas Manufacturing Outlet Survey released their report that showed the climbing sales of sausage being an indication the economy is struggling more than consumers might realize.
The report stated, “We are seeing modest growth in our category of dinner sausage, as sausage is a good protein substitute for higher-priced proteins and can ‘stretch’ consumers’ food budgets.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that sausage is about six dollars cheaper than beefsteak, which makes it a great alternative for many consumers looking to cut down.
Lester said that with the prices climbing higher, that many have to make decisions on trade offs to stretch their budget further.
Said Lester, ”The reality right now is that everything is up across the board: housing prices, energy prices and food prices.”
She continued, “The basic necessities are up, and they’ve been up cumulatively for years now. And even though the Biden administration will tell you inflation is going down, that doesn’t mean that we’re still not feeling the effects of the last few years.”
Lester continued to say that this could mean that companies aren’t receiving much revenue, and this could result in a downward spiral that could lead to higher prices or even more layoffs.
