Duckworth argues that Pete Hegseth has a controversial past, especially his views on women in combat and previous allegations.
According to the senator from Illinois, Hegseth’s controversies suggest a lack of integrity needed for the role.
Duckworth, who is a decorated Army veteran and staunch advocate for women in the military, voiced her opposition to Hegseth’s nomination.
Drawing on her own military experience, Duckworth emphasized that women play a critical role in the Armed Forces.
She stated, “Our military could not go to war without the women who wear this uniform.”
Hegseth’s nomination has sparked debate about his stance on women and his qualifications.
As per Duckworth’s account, Hegseth served as an infantry officer without holding command beyond a platoon leader.
The senator believes his experience falls short for a position responsible for 3 million personnel and a $900 billion budget.
Furthermore, Duckworth argued that past allegations of sexual misconduct against Hegseth should automatically disqualify him for the role.
“This is not the kind of person you want to lead the Department of Defense,” the senator declared.
Duckworth also claimed that some GOP members might not vet nominees that align with Trump’s agenda, regardless of the controversies surrounding them.
Ultimately, Duckworth remains resolute in her decision even if public opinion on Hegseth is divided. According to recent polls, 33% view him positively and 39% are uncertain.
She plans to drill Hegseth during the nomination process, challenging both his qualifications and the allegations.
“It’s frankly an insult and really troubling that Mr. Trump would nominate someone who has admitted that he’s paid off a victim who has claimed rape allegations against him,” Duckworth continued.
