(AmericanProsperity.com) – American parents should be aware of their children’s education as the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report revealed an alarming decline in students’ reading skills, with many failing to meet basic literacy benchmarks.
Despite billions in federal spending, the education system is failing American children. The woke agenda and pandemic-era policies have left students behind, raising serious questions about the competence of those in charge of schools.
The 2024 NAEP evaluation, known as the Nation’s Report Card, paints a grim picture of the state of education in America.
Reading scores have plummeted to unprecedented lows, with fourth- and eighth-grade students performing worse than their pre-pandemic counterparts.
In a rare moment of honesty, the Department of Education (DOE) admitted the gravity of the situation.
“Today’s NAEP results reveal a heartbreaking reality for American students and confirm our worst fears: not only did most students not recover from pandemic-related learning loss, but those students who were the most behind and needed the most support have fallen even further behind,” the DOE stated.
The numbers are staggering. A whopping 33% of eighth graders and 40% of fourth graders now have “below basic” reading skills—the highest percentages in decades.
These students lack fundamental abilities such as making simple inferences or understanding basic vocabulary.
This is a direct result of the left’s misguided policies and obsession with pushing woke ideologies instead of focusing on core academic skills.
While the left would have Americans believe that this educational catastrophe is solely due to the pandemic, the truth is far more damning.
The decline in reading scores began around 2015, long before COVID-19 hit.
This points to a systemic failure in the education system, one that has been exacerbated by liberal policies that prioritize social engineering over academic excellence.
The growing performance gap between high- and low-performing students is particularly alarming.
While wealthier students have managed to maintain or even improve their scores, those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are falling further behind.
This widening divide is a direct indictment of the left’s failed policies that claim to champion equality but instead perpetuate and worsen educational inequities.
Moreover, chronic absenteeism remains a significant challenge, with lower-performing students more likely to miss school.
The urgency to address these educational setbacks cannot be overstated. As Americans confront the harsh reality of declining reading proficiency and unequal progress in math, renewed efforts to reform the education system must be a priority.
Ensuring future generations are equipped with essential skills is advantageous—it is imperative for the nation’s prosperity.
