Top Democrat Eats Crow for Demanding Subway Security Defunding

( – A recent shooting in a Brooklyn subway resulted in dozens of injuries. As authorities beef up the law enforcement presence in the rapid transit stations, a possible culprit behind the lack of security may have come to light. In 2019, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and her colleagues were against increasing the law enforcement presence.

The Democrats argued in a letter that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) should focus on other aspects instead of security. In the letter AOC and her fellow progressives sent to Andrew Cuomo, who was the New York Governor at the time, they recommended the MTA instead use their resources to invest in bus and subway services and maintenance to improve them. AOC even shared a tweet, featuring the letter, to show her followers what she was trying to accomplish.

Several other Democrats, including Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY), State Senators Jessica Ramos, Alessandra Biaggi, Michael Gianaris, Julia Salazar, Luis Sepulveda, and former Representative Jose Serrano, all of whom have pushed to defund the police, signed the letter with AOC. The letter points out alleged racial disparities in law enforcement while claiming increasing the police presence would only harm minorities.

The letter has seen increased scrutiny since the recent shooting in Brooklyn. It’s obvious New York needs more common sense and less progressive logic. Perhaps if they didn’t rely on AOC and similar Democratic lawmakers to make these decisions, the recent shooting may never have occurred.
