(AmericanProsperity.com) – Seeking to ensure accountability, a damning House task force report has exposed shocking security failures that left GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump vulnerable to assassination.
The bipartisan panel’s findings revealed a web of incompetence and miscommunication that allowed a gunman to breach security and open fire at a rally, killing one rallygoer and wounding two others.
Comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats, the House task force conducted an extensive investigation into the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
According to the report, the Secret Service completely failed in its duty to safeguard Trump.
The agency’s poor communication with local authorities and inability to secure the event site allowed gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks to carry out his attack.
The task force highlighted “fragmented lines of communication and unclear chains of command” between the Secret Service and Pennsylvania state and local police.
This bureaucratic mess created dangerous gaps in security that were exploited by the wannabe assassin.
Perhaps most disturbing is the revelation that law enforcement had several opportunities to stop the gunman before he opened fire.
New interviews with local officers revealed that Crooks was spotted behaving suspiciously before the attack, but no action was taken.
After this security disaster, five Secret Service agents were placed on modified duty and then-director Kimberly Cheatle resigned.
The task force is set to release a final report with recommendations by mid-December. Still, some are calling for a complete overhaul of security protocols to prevent future attacks on political figures.
